Mushroom cultivation on beds

Beds for mushroom cultivation are usually used in underground openings such as duffers and sometimes in empty vegetable stores and poultry-yards etc. Prepared compost is put in beds on the floor’s surface or on top of a polyethylene film. Mycelium can be planted directly into the bed. The beds’ dimensions are of big importance. The basic advantage of this technique is the absence of expenses for any containers (shelves, tanks etc.) for compost.

Mushroom cultivation on beds

Today, this type of cultivation is used quite rarely. The reasons are the following:

  • Hand labour is most often used while forming the bed, applying the casing layer and unloading the used batch;

  • It’s hard to carry out a good cleanup of the room, it’s impossible to clean the floor and there are more chances for the compost and the casing layer to become infected with pathogenic microorganisms and pests brought in by footwear;

  • When one part of a bed is infected, the disease can spread all over the bed;

  • After the end of the cultivation cycle and after the room has been cleaned, there’s a risk that a new batch can be infected, because of the remained compost’s micro-particles which contain pathogenic organisms;

  • Underutilization of the room’s area for mushroom cultivation

This technique is recommended in autumn, winter and spring times if cheap and big areas with limited height are available.
