industrial farming

Hello I was recently hired to manage a mushroom farm in canada, it is a large facility with 60 grow rooms (4 rows of dutch shelving) 6 platforms high. I have a small issue I am trying to fix. We have been in trouble with the safety authority on using safety rails on the rolling platforms for mushroom pickers.

We need to implement a system where the pickers will use them. WCB notes if i train them and they sign a form stating that they have been trained and understand that they must use them and it is up to them if they dont that they alone will be held responsible for the actions and that they can be fined, not our company.

What systems do other farms have ? should i have special carts built so that the workers can access the rails easily. ?

The big issue is that the pickers are paid by piece work. They have no real supervisor.
And they do not follow directions. There is a language barrier and I do not speak Vietnamese. So it is very challenging!

I want to make a record of employees and document training updates and ake a form they will sign saying they understand , and were rained to use safety rails, and if they dont use them its them that can get a fine.

How do other farms deal with these ,and keeping workers using them. !

Saftey is a big concern of mine, but there is not much right now!

Any help would be great thanks!!!

    Dear Jessy C
Thank you for kind interest you had and visit my site.
I like to meet people, and exchange experiences with them about Mushroom growing.
I was in Canada in Vancouver, 1997, at International Mushroom Growers Conference..
Nice time and I met interested people there.
What is regarding your particular problem I can tell you next:
I can advise you how we do in Russia: For every working operation we have Manual, with instruction what are about working operation. This instruction are written and delivered to the workers. They are obligated to reed this instruction and sign under their paper.
Also every instructive information is published and standing at position where all workers can reed it.
We have also training, for workers:
--Training for operators and workers end managing staff.
--Every 6 months, we control, and check and update this instructional paper.

Also we have training of the workers for planed predictable problems what can
    happening at mushroom farm.
Every six months, we make training for unpredictable situation. In this way we have workers ready to react in proper way.

In our country,Russia, we write instruction, manual, in our language. You write in English,
and workers, has to learn this instruction.

You have to provide for workers protection (belts), and they have to use it.
Absolutely they must use. Independent of payment, they has to use use protection.
In other countries, are used picking trolleys but you have to many growing rooms, it is rather big investment..

I hope it is helpful for you..

    Sincerely Tsarev Aleksandar Vladimirovič
